Mia Love, the pioneering political figure renowned for being the first Black Republican woman elected to the U.S. Congress, passed away on March 23, 2025, at the age of 49, following a courageous battle with glioblastoma, an aggressive form of brain cancer.
Born Ludmya Bourdeau in Brooklyn, New York, to Haitian immigrants, Love's life epitomized the American Dream. She converted to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and relocated to Utah in 1998. Her political journey commenced in Saratoga Springs, where she served on the city council in 2003 and later became mayor in 2010. Her tenure was marked by effective governance and a commitment to community development.
In 2014, Love made history by winning the election to represent Utah's 4th Congressional District, serving until 2019. During her time in Congress, she was an active member of the House Financial Services Committee and the Congressional Black Caucus, advocating for policies centered on tax reform, economic development, and public safety.
After her congressional tenure, Love continued to influence public discourse as a political commentator for CNN and as a guest host on ABC's "The View." Her insights and perspectives enriched national conversations, reflecting her dedication to public service and civic engagement.
In February 2022, Love was diagnosed with glioblastoma. Despite aggressive treatments, including participation in clinical trials, her cancer progressed. Earlier this month, her family shared that treatments were no longer effective, and they shifted focus to cherishing their remaining time together.
Love's passing elicited an outpouring of tributes from political figures and community leaders. Utah Governor Spencer Cox expressed his sorrow, praising her as a "true trailblazer and visionary leader" whose legacy will have a lasting, positive impact on the state. Former Senator Mitt Romney also honored Love, highlighting her courage, grace, and unwavering belief in the American Dream.
Mia Love is survived by her husband, Jason, and their three children. Her life and career remain a testament to resilience, dedication, and the enduring spirit of public service.
